If you are not aware that a general election will happen very soon, you might come from far away. UK Parliamentary general election will be held on Thursday 4 July 2024 and in the Battersea constituency you will have a choice of 9 candidates.
With our friends for Lavender-Hill.uk we have contacted all the candidates and offered them to answer a few questions.
We will publish the responses as we receive them and will continually update this article until the election date.

Green Party – Joe Taylor
Joe Taylor and his family have lived in Battersea for six years and they love it there. Since his daughter was born nine years ago, he has dedicated as much time as possible to combating climate breakdown, aiming to secure a viable future for her and all young people. That is why he is running in the general election for the Green Party – the only party that takes the climate crisis seriously.

Reform UK – Barry Edwards
Barry Edwards is a BS EN ISO International Standards Lead Auditor, suitably qualified and experienced to verify compliance with evidenced management systems. What makes Battersea special for him is its relationship with the Thames Estuary, Battersea Park, Falcon Park, Heathbrook Park, Clapham Common, and all the other wonderful small open spaces that make it such a green constituency.

Conservative and Unionist Party – Tom Pridham
Tom Pridham has lived in the area for ten years, initially near Clapham Junction and later in Balham. Eighteen months ago, he and his partner bought their first property, a flat just off Lavender Hill. Tom has served on Wandsworth Council for two years, representing the ward where he lives, Lavender.

Workers Party of Britain – Dan Smith
Dan Smith has spent the majority of his life in and around the area. He received his early education in Dulwich before pursuing his studies in dentistry at Kings College Hospital. Liberal Democrats – Francis Chubb
Francis Chubb is a solicitor living in Battersea with his family. His diverse career began as a junior army officer, followed by a stint as a journalist in Egypt. He then engaged in various business ventures in south-east Europe. His commitment to public service includes serving as a trustee and later as the chair of the trustees for a charity that operated a museum in London.

Rejoin EU – Georgina Burford-Connole
Georgina is standing in election for the Rejoin EU party.
Brendan Donnelly, the party leader, says Brexit is destroying jobs, fuelling the cost of living crisis and making personal travel more and more difficult, and that a general election should be an opportunity to challenge and hold accountable those who foisted it upon us. He aims to challenge the ‘fundamental dishonesty’ of the major parties trying to ignore or downplay the impacts Brexit is having on the UK, and the party is putting forward 26 candidates.

Social Democratic Party – Ed Dampier
The SDP describes itself as a patriotic, economically left-leaning, and culturally traditional political party, whose campaign promises include ending mass immigration, re-nationalising our railways and utilities, and making a decent home available for everyone.

Independent (former Brexit Party) – Jake Thomas
Jake Thomas is standing as an independent candidate. He’s a sole trader living on the Shaftesbury Estate (near Queenstown Road), with his wife and three children, who also stood as a candidate for the Brexit Party back in 2019. His policies include controlling migration, putting people before parties, resisting the rise in corporate capitalism / socialism, and not buying imported Chinese products.

How to vote
The next general election is on 4 July 2024.
The general election is held to elect 650 Members of Parliament (MPs) to the House of Commons.
The UK is divided into 650 areas called constituencies, each electing one MP to represent local residents at Westminster. The borough of Wandsworth is divided into three constituencies, each of which elects one MP. Marsha de Cordova has been the Labour MP for Battersea since 2017 and is a candidate for re-election.
Anyone on the electoral register aged 18 or over on polling day can vote in the general election, as long as they are a British citizen, a qualifying Commonwealth citizen, or a Republic of Ireland citizen with a UK address.
The deadline to register to vote in the general election is 23:59 BST on Tuesday 18 June.
Since May 2023, voters have to show a valid form of photo ID at polling stations to vote in person at a general election. You do not need to show your polling card. There are 22 acceptable forms of ID, including passports, driving licences, Oyster cards with photos, National identity card issued by an EEA state, Identity card bearing the Proof of Age (PASS cards), SmartPass … etc.
